As a young boy in Jacksonville, Florida, Elgin Davis dreamed of becoming a professional football player. His hero was the extraordinary running back of the Chicago Bears, Gale Sayers. Elgin had even painted "Chicago Bears Here I Come" on his bedroom door.
But who would have imagined that a young man of few material means would see his dream of playing in the NFL come true? The odds are stacked against any youngster who wants to get there; only a handful are drafted every year.
Elgin's parents, however, taught him valuable lessons that included the need to work hard and persevere through adversity. So when his football talent took him to the University of Central Florida on a full scholarship, he was ready. Keeping his parents' values in mind and, relying on his faith for strength, he became a collegiate star and set records with his team that have only recently been broken.
He was rewarded when he was drafted by the New England Patriots in 1987. His dreams had come true; he had it all and he was set. Or so he thought.
Life for Elgin would take some drastic turns. Injuries that required constant treatment would hamper and then end his career. Family issues would require him to turn his focus from the game and career he loved. And most devastating, his best friend and former teammate, Darryl Usher, would lose his life at the young age of 25 to a murderer's gun. At a time, it seemed that Elgin was lost; adrift in his challenges.
Why Did It Happen To Me is Elgin's story. Despite the ups and downs that would emotionally cripple another, Elgin ended his own downward spiral and emerged a stronger and more empathetic man. He relied on faith and friends to do so and now he wants to share his story with others who may be facing the same kinds of difficulties.
An accomplished speaker, Elgin has a message of motivation and inspiration for his audiences. He will be embarking on a media and book tour to take those messages wherever they will help other people who find themselves with difficult life challenges. He hopes to help others, no matter their age or background, with his own example
