Gray Matters Foundation: Brain Tumors Stink ... Thats What We Think!
Lanette Veres of Arizona is a ten-year brain tumor survivor and she's on a mission.  For several years Lanette has taken what she learned from her own experience with her disease and has been reaching out to others who share a similar challenge.  Through personal support and contact, Lanette helps brain tumor patients and their loved ones to better understand what they face and - most importantly -
to face it with cheer and hope.

Challenge:
To better increase the scope and nature of her efforts Lanette wanted to formally organize her efforts as a nonprofit corporation and secure 501(c)(3) nonprofit status from the IRS.  She also wanted to find a consultant who had experience with both nonprofit organization creation, generally, and brain tumor efforts, specifically.  Hawkins + Company was a perfect fit because of our work with the late Tug McGraw and the Foundation we co-founded with him and our experience with nonprofits.

Building Blocks:  Hawkins + Company spent many hours talking with Lanette to learn about her vision and then began the formation process.  We prepared all of the legal documents required to become a formal organization: State Articles of Incorporation, Charitable Organization Registration, ByLaws and the IRS Form 1023 Application for Exemption.  In November, the Gray Matters Foundation became an Arizona nonprofit corporation and in March of 2008 the IRS granted 501(c)(3) status.

Hawkins + Company is now working with Lanette to move her organization into the operational stage and will continue to provide marketing services to assist with outreach and growth.  Hawkins + Company is currently working with Lanette and the Board of Directors to create and implement a national public awareness and fundraising campaign that will include a celebrity component and public involvement.
