The Philadelphia Breast Cancer 3-Day 
3 Days .... 60 Miles

For the last several years, dedicated walkers have embarked on a trek that took them 60 miles over the course of 3 days, through the suburbs of, and in the city of, Philadelphia.  The Komen for the Cure's Philadelphia Breast Cancer 3-Day begins in the early a.m. as the sun rises and thousands of people gather excitedly to begin their journey.  60 miles later, after walking through many towns, the walkers arrive at inspiring, joyous closing ceremonies to celebrate and honor those who have faced the challenge of breast cancer.  In between they sleep and eat meals at a camp that is set up and run with military precision and meets all of the important medical needs of the dedicated participants.

In between, the campers also share their own stories of why they walk.  Some are survivors who have battled breast cancer for many years and some have been recently diagnosed.  Many are the loved ones who have lost a parent, sibling, child or friend to the disease.  All bring their own special reason for joining the 3-Day.

The Philadelphia event is one of many that are held around the country and Hawkins + Company has been a part of the 2006 and 2007 efforts.  In each, Laurie Hawkins, President of Hawkins + Company, served as the Volunteer Coach with the responsibility of recruiting and managing the 100+ volunteers needed to staff the closing ceremonies.  Several hundred women and men spend a long and busy Sunday to welcome the walkers to the ceremony location for the inspiring close.

The 3Day is a weekend of hope, as walkers honor lives lost, celebrate survivors, promote breast cancer research and help bring breast cancer care to those who need it.   Special thanks go to the friends of Hawkins + Company who lent their time and talent to serve as team captains for the volunteer teams supporting the closing ceremonies - we look forward to seeing everyone again in 2008!
