Portfolio: Kyle's Peace - Kyle Danel Kerpan Foundation
Client:  The Kyle Daniel Kerpan Foundation; Lafayette Hill, PA
Service:  Nonprofit Creation: Preparation of IRS Application for Tax Exemption, Form 1023;and Operational Consulting

Kyle Kerpan was an inspiration to all who knew him during his short and meaningful life.  Kyle lost his battle with his disease in late 2006 after an 11-year battle with brain tumors and related disease symptoms.  During the time of his illness, his parents and twin sister Tessa fought his battle alongside him.  Their experience and the knowledge these three individuals learned will shape this new nonprofit group to help other pediatric brain tumor patients and their families.

The Foundation's mission is to support and enhance the well-being of pediatric brain tumor patients through programs and activities developed to help and encourage them to reach their full potential.  The Foundation will also develop programs for siblings of pediatric brain tumor patients to champion their interests and nurture their well-being, and to provide support activities for parents of pediatric brain tumor patients. These programs will be conducted under the names Kyle's Peace, in memory of Kyle, and Tessa's Quest, named for Kyle's twin sister.

Building Blocks:
Hawkins + Company was retained to work with Joan Kerpan, Kyle's mother and the President of the Foundation, in developing the organization's mission statement and activities, creating the nonprofit entity and preparing the IRS Form 1023, Application for Exemption, to secure nonprofit 501(c)(3) status.

Hawkins + Company also provided consulting services to support the Foundation's move to an operational entity.

Result: The Foundation was incorporated in Pennsylvania in 2008 and the Application for Exemption was filed with the Internal Revenue Service in January, 2009.  The IRS granted the tax exempt status in March, 2009 after an 8-week review period and the Kyle Daniel Kerpan Foundation is now a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
