We'd love to see your work and evaluate its potential. We receive many submissions so we ask that you follow the guidelines set forth here.
First determine that your work fits into our areas of interest listed here. We primarily handle nonfiction but we will review fiction. If your manuscript fits into the guidelines, please contact us as we indication.
- Mail or email a query letter that includes all of the information listed below. If you use regular mail to send your query and would like the materials returned, please be sure to include a SASE. If you email your query, embed your letter in the body of your email. Do not send your materials as an attachment. Please put QUERY in the Subject Line of your email. We do not accept fax or phone queries.
- Send the following information:
- Your name and contact information
- Writing credentials, with history of writing career and prior published writings. Please note if any of the writings are self-published or published-on-demand.
- Brief synopsis of the book: Sell your concept to us
- First five pages of your manuscript
- Table of contents of a nonfiction manuscript
- Send a manuscript that is finished: edited, proofread and fact-checked. We do not provide editing services for our represented authors. We will assist authors in identifying editing needs.

Don’t -
- Do not send your entire manuscript unless we have requested it. We do not read unsolicited manuscripts.
- Do not send attachments with email unless we ask; we won’t open them.
If we are interested by the query letter you send we will contact you to provide a full proposal or, in some cases, the entire manuscript. For a first-time fiction author, we will ask to see the entire manuscript; for non-fiction, we will ask for a proposal that includes at least three complete chapters.
We will provide you with detailed instructions on submission format with our request for the additional materials.
We will review your query letter in the order of its receipt. Please allow one to two months for a response. Please do not call our office to check on the status of your inquiry. If you have not heard from us after six weeks, send an email to querystatus@hawkinsandcompany.com.
